It’s Not Easy Being Green returns

It's not easy being green BBC book One of my favourite BBC TWO programmes is returning for a second series next Thursday at 20:30 on BBC TWO (thank god they haven’t moved it to BBC ONE). Dick Strawbridge and his family spent the first series building their super green house, complete with independent natural spring water supply, solar-thermal heating for water, hydroelectric and wind power generation, composting toilet, vegetable garden, pigs (that are eaten), environmentally friendly greenhouse and finally their own bio-diesel plant in the garage.

From what I have seen, series two continues from where we left of. Dick is now teaching all he has learnt to other green minded folk out there, the ones like us who want to be green and organic but have no idea where to start. Hmm, this sounds rather familiar. Oh yeah, Crap At The Environment is also aiming to achieve the same task, maybe we should join forces on this one. Any members of CATE reading this should definitely be in on Thursday night to watch It’s Not Easy Being Green, however this programme is also great inspiration to anyone else who wants to take their personal environment into consideration.

Siân and I have been discussing designing and building our own super-green home at some point in the future. There are a lot of variables that will either make or break this project, but I feel that with enough planning (ten years say), we’ll be in a good position in about 2020 to build our own super green home. A lot of the ideas I am incorporating have come directly from watching It’s Not Easy Being Green, so I owe them a lot already. Incidentally, a lot of the other inspiration comes from that other great show, Grand Designs, currently in a new series on Channel 4 (Wednesdays, 21:00).

I will be talking a lot more about our super green house project in coming posts, in fact I’ll be talking about it up until the day we move in and even then I’ll still be talking about it. But as it is a long way off, I will be using this blog as a notepad of sorts, to tell you about what I want to do whilst simultaneously recording it for myself. It won’t be all dull text like this. Version 1.0 of the design is currently being built in 3D to test design features and space, yes I’m that serious about it. So you can expect to see pictures and video some time in the Autumn.

So watch It’s Not Easy Being Green from Thursday 22nd March at 20:30. Also watch Grand Designs on Wednesdays at 21:00 on Channel 4. If you are thinking of building your own house, its must see television - which is rare in this multichannel simu-casting world we live in.

I’ll be posting about my progress in the first CATE Challenge this evening.
