JISC national e-Books observatory project launched

JISC national e-books observatory project web site Over the weekend a new mini-site for JISC Collections, for whom I have worked exclusively for until recently, launched. This new web site has been developed internally and is hosted on Polaris Digital servers in a departure for JISC Collections.

The brief for the site was simple, “We would like a simple web site that we can self-maintain the content through a WYSIWYG interface, with a blog and RSS feeds”. I was contenplating using Joomla! to power this web site, but after much consideration it was clear Joomla! was a little overkill for such a site.

After spending the last month working with WordPress, this so called “simple” blogging tool is actually a lot more powerful than it first appears. The flexibility of WordPress is really its power and by completely reconfiguring the standard working environment, it was possible to fulfill all the needs of the client without having to implement thousands of lines of customised (and unmaintainable) code.

You can check out the JISC national e-Books obervatory project web site at http://www.jiscebooksproject.org.
