Tim Minchin
Tim Minchin, comedian, actor, composer songwriter, pianist & musical director, Rock n Roll Megastar! On Saturday night Siân and I went to see Tim Minchin live at the Lowry Quay Theatre in Salford. I had previously seen a brief interview and performance from Tim on the Culture Show on BBC Two. The song he played was ‘Dark Side‘ , a song that shouted dispair at the record industry for not taking him seriously because his songs had no apparent depth and wouldn’t sell to the ‘teenage market’. Okay, so the song is a little more than just that, but it certainly caught my attention on a saturday night in.
At the end of the performance, Lauren Lavern announced that after a highly successful three-show stint in London, Tim was going on tour, playing amoungst others The Lowry Theatre in Salford. Seconds later two tickets where brought.
So who is he? Well he is an Australian living in London with his wife, trying failing to become a Rock n Roll Megastar. After being told by Sony Music (and probably many others) that his style was very witty but not what they were looking for, Tim has turned to stand-up. However if you see his show, you’ll see that he is still very much the musician and the comedy is an added gem to the performance. This is evident that for the first fifteen minutes of his show, he didn’t talk at all rather performing a trio of very funny songs.
But what makes this show different is that Tim is a brilliant musician and comedian, making you want to kill him for being so talented in two very difficult mediums. He is no Bill Baily, although I am sure many will compare. Bill Baily is more comedian than musician now, not that I’m attacking the great Bill Baily. Bill, you still rock! Tim’s performance is probably closer to the likes of Tenacious D ’s debut album.
This is dark dark stuff. When Tim does leave the piano alone for a few minutes he sets out his world view in startling honesty and thankfully for me,using common sense. His view on religion and concepts such as fate rang so true to my hearts. I’m sure the Christian faternity would see things different, but f*ck and Christian’s! When have they had anything worthwhile to add?
I could go on and on about it, but far better for you to go and enjoy a truely entertaining evening with Tim. Plus, use Canvas Bags when you’re shopping!
