Supermarket loyalty cards

After watching a very interesting set of programmes on BBC Four the other day, I came to realise what was already staring me blindly in the face - supermarket loyalty cards are not what they seem.

Now I don’t personally use them for the simple reason that I don’t like giving companies market research about their customers, worth thousands of pounds, for free. Because first and foremost, this is what loyalty cards are really about. But we have all known this for a long time and this presents no new facts.

Interactive globe

Google Earth - Global view

For the last six months or so, Windows users have enjoyed probably my favourite application of 2005 - Google Earth. Finally, after a long wait, the Macintosh version of Google Earth arrives, and it runs beautifully.

If you don’t know what Google Earth is, then imagine a giant physical globe of the Earth, that as you moved closer and closer to it, it got more and more detailed. So if you moved close enough into Manchester, UK, for example, you would be able to see where our building is - or you would if the image was up to date.

Google Earth - Rome

Which is the only problem with Google Earth, it does have very high-resolution images of certain areas of the planet, however the images of the UK especially seem to have been taken between 1995-2000. Our building in Manchester doesn’t exist yet, as well as many Manchester landmarks like the Urbis Centre.

However, Google are making every efford to keep the system up to date, and I am sure that in time everything will be mapped.

To get Google Earth, goto http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html and select the correct version to download, either Macintosh or Windows. You will require a broadband connection to the internet to gain the best performance as all of the images are streamed down as required.

If you take yourself (copy and paste into Google Earth search box) to 28′24.64 N, 14′32.65 W, you will arrive at our location in Manchester - not yet finished!
